A year ago I went to The Observatory in Santa Ana to cover Jarabe de Palo’s performance, and when I was invited to attend I was advised to show up early so I could catch the opening act. A few minutes after my arrival, a band took the stage and they completely thrashed the stage with an electrifying stage presence and a riveting guitar attack and pulsating and energetic beats that completely blew me away. This band was an Orange County based band called Signa.
Hailing from Orange County, CA, Signa have established themselves as one of the premier bands in Latin Alternative music in Orange County.
Signa has shared the stage with some of today’s most relevant Latin artist like Hello Seahorse!, Babasonicos, Ximena Sariñana, Elefante, and of course, Jarabe De Palo.
In 2011, Signa took part in the Creation Fest where they played with Switchfoot and Thousand Foot Krutch, making them the first Hispanic band ever to play at this event.
In 2009, Signa released their first EP “Cuando Se Ponga El Sol” which portrays the band’s Mexican roots and their American-influenced rock.
Signa have just completed the recording of their second EP, “Temporales”, which was produced by Cesar “Vampiro” Lopez, former guitarist for Maná and Jaguares.
With “Vampiro” in the production booth, Signa has been able to capture that explosive sound I first heard on that stage at The Observatory a year ago.
“Temporales” is composed of 4 songs, which shows a band that is not only maturing musically but also lyrically as it touches on themes of self growth, as is the case on “Volver A Nacer”, “Temporales” and “Cielos Abiertos”, which features a special appearance by “Vampiro” himself lending his mastery on the guitars and on “Pinches y Jardineros”, the band touches on social issues as they sing about the plight of the undocumented workers in this country.
To celebrate the release of their new EP, Signa played at the House of Blues in Anaheim on November 20th .
